[Speak Lab] Information Privacy 1

Information privacy, or data privacy (or data protection), is the relationship between collection and dissemination of data, technology, the public expectation of privacy, and the legal and political issues surrounding them.  – Wikipedia

Apparently, access to information is getting more expedient. We use different devices such as Social Networking Services, Bluetooth devices, V2V communication and other numerous devices. Through these methods, we easily provide information, and we easily get information. Nowadays, we can talk to people from different countries, and we can buy products that are from different countries by simple clicks. As our daily orbit got much wider through online, others have easier access to our own information (which can be private). Because of this easy access, issues such as data leak is on the rise.

“$174 million records involved in data thefts”

“1 U.S data breach costs $5.5 million”

Not only a financial loss, but also a moral damage through online privacy leak became a whole issue that we should not exclude. On the other hand, because the way we provide our information is getting more convenient, we tend to feel numb on providing personal information.

As new technology consistently pops up, risks are arising at the same time, and different types of hazards appear. In order to understand current situation of this Wicked problem, and its cause and effect, our group went through several articles about information privacy and created our own concept map.

For the initial concept map, I wanted to focus on how people became numb to information privacy threats. So I started off from current situation and tried to map out how people provide their personal information. Moreover I depicted current solutions and devices.

After our group reviewed each others’ concept map, I thought how possible threats are applied for different places. So I researched how we are connected to devices through wifi connection and stated each possible threats.
